Beth Medley, Hunter + Boo
When Beth Medley first became a mother, she found a need to shop mindfully but quickly realised the fashion industry is one of the top polluters in the world. So began Hunter + Boo, a sustainable childrenswear line that Beth founded with her sister, Sarah (who works from London!).
Brand philosophy
We adhere to a strong principle of “style without season”; our designs are classic shapes and signature prints that are not limited to being worn a few times. You will notice that majority of our designs continue on as long as they are popular with our customers.
Another big part of this is ensuring that we have the best possible quality for our products. We conduct rigorous testing to ensure that our products are not only safe and durable but also wash well. We want Hunter + Boo to be the clothes that are passed on to siblings and friends for years to come!
As a Small Business Owner…
I am driven by a passion to champion ethical fashion and supply chain transparency. We set out from the beginning to be a brand of action, building the business on a firm set of ethical foundations. It is a privilege to be so involved in the production process and with our on-ground team. It’s hugely rewarding to see our creations come to life from the spark of an idea to one being worn by a customer.
Social responsibility is
About always asking questions! If you truly care about who makes the products you buy and how they are made, it’s important to do a little research and ask these brands questions.
Unfortunately, you can’t always trust that a brand that lists itself as “ethical”, “sustainable”, or even “organic” is truly living up to those promises. This is one reason why we use certifications for our factories, fabrics, and dyes.
For example, Global Organic Textile Standard(GOTS) organic cotton certification means that at a glance, our customers can have complete confidence that our material is 100% certified organic cotton.
Collaborative work
One product we are most proud of is our hand-knitted teddy bears. We produce them in collaboration with the Island Craft initiative who work with small groups of local artisans in Sri Lanka.
For our teddies, we work with a group of female artisans in Northern Sri Lanka who lost their husbands during the civil war. Knitting allows them to work within their own community and earn a good wage to rebuild their lives.
Each bear is hand-knitted with pure cotton yarn and clothed with up-cycled fabric remnants. We love how they all their own distinctive personality too! Plus, kids adore them because they’re super soft!
